Street Renamed in honor of MLK
Around the nation At least 777 streets are named for King in the United States, each
with its own history and character, said Matthew Mitchelson, a University of Georgia
geographer who has researched roads named for the late civil rights leader.
They range from MLK Circle in Tupelo, Mississippi, at one-tenth of a mile, to MLK
Boulevard in Tampa, Florida, at 14 miles. Eighty-five percent of them are in the
South, where King did most of his work and where African-American populations are
more concentrated.
"The dominant stereotype is that these are crime-ridden, low-income areas that are
just full of blight," said Mitchelson. But the stereotype doesn't hold up, according to
his study in the March 2007 issue of Social Science Quarterly. "In terms of
employment, Martin Luther King streets are actually much more vibrant than streets in
general," providing addresses for more jobs on average than even Main streets,
Mitchelson said in an interview.
Each year there is a MLK breakfast at Marian College celebrating diversity and
brotherhood for all mankind. Many of the city's leaders, officials and residents come
out to honor this great hero of civil rights. The FDL Reporter News Paper prints a nice
story the next day highlighting the event and important points of the gathering. This is
wonderful and great!, therefore it is only fitting we take it further than just a once a
year event, but a daily memorial of honor embedded into the infrastructure of our city.
A Few Possible Streets Are As Follows:
MILITARY ROAD This first choice was made because Military runs through a diverse segment of residential and business properties. It is also a connecting highway in to and out of Fond du Lac to other cities. The New YMCA would sit right on MLK Street.
|
FOREST AVENUE This second choice is for the exact same reason as Military Road with the exception of it being a connection highway. The diversity of residents and business makes this a perfect street to be renamed for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
|
WESTERN/4TH This third choice is also a healthy diverse segment of residential and business properties. Because it is the at foot of downtown running east and west past the county jail and various landmarks, this is also fitting.
